FSPA Scholarship Stories: Valerie Lyons will be coming to a TV Near you

Valerie Lyons is another academic star who has been making the FSPA Scholarship Program proud.  The senior from the University of Florida is a Telecommunications major who was made for the lights, camera and action.

In her third year of winning the scholarship, Valerie is wrapping up an impressive academic career.  Not only is she succeeding in the classroom, but away from it, she’s locked up multiple impressive internships.

“Currently, I am interning as a news intern with WGFL CBS 4 Gainesville,” said Valerie.  “I assist the news director, reporters and producers in gathering news.”

Valerie has her sights set on being a reporter once college is over.  She is currently reporting and anchoring News in 90 and with WUFT PBS Gainesville.

The path to becoming an on air-reporter isn't financially easy.   Editing software and equipment like cameras, mics, lights and batteries is an expense placed mostly on the student, so that’s where Valerie has used the FSPA scholarship award.

“The money FSPA has allowed me to purchase books and software so I can continue to work on my craft as a reporter,” said Valerie.  “The money has absolutely contributed to my academic and professional growth.”

Lyons also pointed out how she feels so lucky to be connected with such a generous industry.

“It’s really humbling to see such a home-grown industry help someone out like me,” said Valerie.  “It’s just so humbling to me.”
