Dr. John Doherty knows first-hand how dangerous the water can be if you can’t swim. At age 11 he witnessed it firsthand, rescuing a young boy from a crowded and lively community pool during the middle of the day.

FSPA recently launched the Florida Swims Foundation Facebook page. The Foundation, formerly Swimming Pool Education and Safety Foundation, funds swimming lessons throughout Florida and the dissemination of safety information and materials.

Isabelle Starner, a USF-Sarasota/Manatee Interdisciplinary Social sciences major, is looking forward to graduating this spring.
The FSPA Scholarship winner is currently holding down an internship in the office of Student Engagement for her school.
“It’s been awesome so far,” said Isabella. “With my role I’m charge of holding leadership events. These events help our students figure out who they are as a leader and how they can better themselves as someone in charge.”

Laura Castanza, the
Director of Education for the Team Horner Group, had a unique introduction to
the pool industry at a young age.
“My father has been an
inventor and formulator of swimming pool surfaces for decades,” said Laura, “As
a family, we spent most of our time in and around water.”
The South Florida
native watched her dad become increasingly fascinated by cements and
aggregates, and resolute in applying them as swimming pool
finishes. It was only a matter
of time before she would contribute.
