Welcome to FSPA's blog series called Pool Routes.  In Pool Routes, we share the stories of FSPA members and how they got started in the pool industry.  You'll hear it all, as no story is the same.  From the challenges they've faced and how they overcame them, to how simple customer service tactics allowed them to achieve success as a business owner.

Holly Waldhauer, from Chicago, knew nothing about swimming pools or the industry.  In the early 2000s she decide to quit her job and join a friend in Florida who was installing pool tile.  It was a niche job which Holly had absolutely zero experience in.  Some would look at a move like that as a risk.

“I was only 22,” said Holly.  “When I made that choice, I was young.  I wasn’t scared at all.”

Kirk Bradley’s story begins as a food scientist, traveling not just the nation but the world. Bradly, for years, was tasked with trying to perfect the flavor of Orange Juice at Lipton and working to improve McDonald’s and KFC’s seasoning and spices among the few responsibilities he had.

Jeff Lucas might not of realized it at age 8, but the experience he was obtaining helping his brother clean residential pools was going to propel him into a career in the industry when it was time to decide on a profession once he was older.

He was working during the summers with his brother Steve, who owned a pool building and servicing company at the time.

Jeff would continue to work with his brother every summer.  However, like everyone, Jeff’s time in the pool industry had a few bumps in the road.

Dave Pruette is not one of those pool professionals who grew up in the industry and watched his parents successfully run a pool company.

In fact, that saying “right place at the right time” could be the answer Dave gives when asked why he got into the industry or how he got his start.  It was almost by accident, really.

Jonathan Mosher is currently the president of A&D pools, an all-encompassing pool company focusing on service.

Jon’s path to becoming a pool professional was paved for him when he was younger, there’s no question about that.

“As early as 10 years old I was in the family pool store,” said Jon.  “At the age of 14 I was out on different jobs, working on pools, specifically cleaning them.”
